    7th International Conference on Imagination and Education

    Pre-Conference Workshop (Certificate) – July 14 – 15, 2009

    Objectives

    Through this workshop, participants will:

    • gain a new perspective on educational practice in which the imagination of learners and teachers plays a central role;
    • develop insights into the contribution of imagination to their own learning and teaching;
    • learn how to uncover the wonderful and extraordinary in all areas of the curriculum;
    • become familiar with a range of examples of imaginative curriculum planning and pedagogy;
    • gain experience in using different imaginative curriculum planning frameworks, in collaboration with other participants;
    • further develop their understanding of imaginative education through structured reflection and discussion;
    • acquire resources, contacts, and advice on how to pursue this approach to education within their own professional context.

    Organization

    Each day runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Coffee, tea, juice, snacks, and lunch are provided. Each participant will receive an extensive resource kit that covers all of the issues in the workshop. Participants who complete both days of the workshop will receive a professional certificate from the Imaginative Education Research Group.

    Day 1 (Tuesday)

    AM: Introduction to imaginative education. Imagination in learning, teaching, and coping with the world. Imagination in teachers' everyday practice (small group work). How classrooms and schools can become more imaginative, and the possible benefits.

    PM: Imagination across the curriculum. Examples of imaginative education (slides and videos). Locating wonder in the curriculum (small group work). Introduction to planning frameworks and structuring units as narrative. Wrap-up review and discussion.

    Day 2 (Wednesday)

    AM: Building imaginative units 1. Using imaginative planning frameworks in practice (teacher presentations; small group work). Poster session and discussion.

    PM: Building imaginative units 2. Using frameworks to build resources and activities for diverse learners (teacher presentations; small group work). Poster session and discussion. Wrap-up review.
