Imagining Community-Based Math Teaching

Weaving, fishing, carving, drumming, eco-tourism – these are not the first activities that come to mind when we think about learning mathematics. Yet perhaps we should, according to Kanwal Neel, a well-known BC mathematics educator who recently completed a study of numeracy practices in the communities of Haida Gwaii as a central component of his PhD thesis.
